I’m James Barrett, based in Manchester, UK. This is my personal website. I’m responsible for the personal information collected through this site and my newsletter. In data protection terms, I’m the data controller.
You can contact me about your information at [email protected].
Newsletter
If you subscribe, I collect your email address and records of your signup, confirmation and subscription choices. I use these to send you an email when I ship something or write a post, and to manage your subscription.
Subscribing is optional. You confirm your email address before your subscription becomes active. I rely on your consent to send the newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in an email or by contacting me. This doesn’t affect the lawfulness of anything done before you withdraw it.
Email tracking
Newsletter emails use open and click tracking. A small image can record when an email is opened, and tracked links record which links are clicked and when. These events are linked to your subscription. I use them to understand which emails and links are useful and improve what I send.
I rely on your consent for this tracking. You can contact me to withdraw that consent. Email apps and security scanners can open messages and follow links automatically, so these records don’t always reflect something you did. I also process delivery, bounce and complaint information to manage email delivery and stop unwanted messages.
Website & email
Cloudflare hosts and protects this website. Serving pages and keeping the site secure involves processing technical information such as your IP address, browser information, requested pages and request times.
If you email me, I receive your email address and the information you include. I use it to reply and handle any follow-up. I rely on my legitimate interests in running a secure website, managing email delivery and responding to correspondence for these purposes. I don’t use advertising cookies or website analytics.
Storage & services
The newsletter database is stored on my own server in the EU, hosted by OVHcloud. Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) delivers the emails and processes the recipient address, message content and delivery information. Cloudflare processes information needed to host and protect this website.
I share information with service providers where it’s needed to run these services, or where the law requires it. I don’t sell your information or share the subscriber list with others for their own marketing.
Some providers may process information outside the UK or European Economic Area. Where a transfer requires protection under UK data protection law, I use an applicable adequacy decision or approved contractual safeguards. You can contact me for details of the arrangements that apply to your information.
Retention
I keep subscriber information while it’s needed to manage your subscription. Unconfirmed signup attempts expire after 48 hours. Information created only for an abandoned signup is removed when there’s no other reason to keep it.
After you unsubscribe, I stop sending the newsletter. I may retain your address in a suppression record to make sure you aren’t added again, and keep consent and subscription records where needed to show how your information was used. I rely on my legitimate interests in respecting your choices and keeping those records.
I keep correspondence for as long as needed to deal with your message and relevant follow-up. Technical records are kept for as long as needed to operate the services, investigate problems and protect them from abuse. You can ask me to delete your personal information; a limited record may still be needed to honour an opt-out or meet a legal obligation.
Your choices
Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access, correct or delete your information, restrict how it’s used, or receive a portable copy. You can withdraw consent at any time.
You can object at any time to your information being used for direct marketing, and to processing based on legitimate interests. Use the unsubscribe link to stop newsletter emails, or email me to exercise your rights or raise a concern.
I don’t make decisions about you using automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects. You can complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Theme preference
The site follows your device’s light or dark setting. If you use the theme button, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage until you clear it. That value isn’t sent to me or used to track you.
You can remove the saved choice below and return to your device setting. Using the theme button again saves a new choice.
Changes
I’ll update this page if how I handle your information changes. The date at the top shows when it was last updated. If a change needs fresh consent, I’ll ask for it before using your information in that way.
